Dear Teresa,

I live a simple, green life with my dog Max. My neighbors to the South, however, become the most wasteful, decadent creatures with each Christmas. As a minimalist, I am disgusted with their hollywho wreaths, jingtinglers, floofloovers, tartookas, gardookas, slooslunkas, whowoopers, and all of the NOISE it creates! I need help – I must find some way to stop Christmas from coming… but how?

Thank you,

G.

Dear G.,

Thank you for your question! I don’t think that you can stop Christmas from coming at all. You will find that even without all of the bizzlebinks and other commercial trappings, Christmas comes just the same. You can, however, do your part to make it more green and therefore truer to the real meaning of Christmas. First, you can make your own decorations out of stuff you already have around the house – like  Santa and reindeer costumes for you and Max. Also, make your own gift wrap from old paper bags or newspapers. And if you must decorate with lights, replace your outdated bulbs with environmentally-friendly LED ones. Another important tip is to remember that after your Feast of Who Pudding and Rare Who Roast Beast, clean up with GreenItUp!’s MultiPurpose Cleaner and be sure to recycle empty cans of Who Hash. Green up your Christmas because Christmas does not come from a store – it means a little bit more.

Merry Christmas and Happy Cleaning!

Teresa

No,  I don’t mean you should dress up as the Hulk or Frankenstein. Although that would be much less cliche than what seems to constitute a proper costume these days: a sexy version of anything. It’s so lame it can’t possibly even be sexy!

I mean we need to be more conscious of how wasteful we are with Holidays and birthdays. Aside from the fact that there are cards for every possible occasion (I hope that we have at least been spared the irony of an Arbor Day card), we buy new costumes and decorations every year.

Make a commitment this year to make your own costume. If you need to buy something to make it work, go to a thrift store. Use your brain to be something creative! The world has seen more than enough Jokers, Pirates, sexy Dorothies or whatever else they are selling at the costume stores.

If you like to decorate, please save your decorations and reuse them each year. Want variety?  Trade decorations each year with a friend.

For more ideas on how to make your Halloween more green, please visit the nifty website posted below. I am new to the site but I assume they will keep us posted on how to be more eco-friendly with each Holiday as they near. If not, I will find one that does!

So, we will discuss this again at Thanksgiving (no Turduckens please – that has to be some crime against the natural order of things).

And please, do not send anyone you know a Halloween card! If you must, make it yourself. If you really want to scare them, depict a world where everyone wears a store-bought costume! Sends chills up my spine every time!

P.S.  I am dressing up as a sexy mop this year. So dirty… ;)
