Thank you for your question! As you may know, GreenItUp! uses only homemade, non-toxic cleaners. Our products are made from completely harmless items such as vinegar, lemon juice, etc.. So, as you say, “no business” between us is possible. As for your suggestion that perhaps “friendship do exist,” I have a few things for you to consider. Do friends cause burns or blindness? Can friendship give you cancer? If we hang out, could water systems be degraded? Will our friendship make it hard for me to breathe? Because all of the items you are trying to interest me in do just these things. Therefore, I do not believe friendship do exist. You may be able to have business and friendship with most other cleaning manufacturers and maid companies, though, as they commonly use the items that you mentioned.

GreenItUp! is moving to Fairfax, VA in November. Teresa, Eric, Frankie and Verna are going too!  Special thanks to Kevin J. and Heather J. for strategic design.

I will be operating full time in Virginia and preparing for the time when GreenItUp! gets so big that I have to hire employees. At that time I will have such a snazzy resume I will get a huge business loan to build a green B&B in the mountains – my ultimate goal! I have no doubt that with the help of Stephanie Snyder, this dream will come true!

We will be located less than an hour from the Mountains and DC. Please, come and visit! We will have two guest rooms. When you visit I will get to practice my B&B skills and you will get to eat the best grits you have ever had! Visit – seriously!

I will still be at some Farmers’ Markets before we leave. So, be sure to buy some cleaner or get refills. Unfortunately, I am unable to accept any new home cleaning clients at this time.

The weekend. I am certainly looking forward to mine. My husband comes home after a week long family vacation that I would have been on if the most precious cat in the Universe, Verna, had not had emergency surgery. (Don’t worry, she is pulling through.) I can’t wait to curl up with Verna and start tackling Dexter Season Three (we are so behind!) No spoilers, please!

Ahhh, the weekend….

What’s better than a weekend? A Holiday Weekend! You have an extra day. You have time to do something you don’t normally do. For instance, you could clean your baseboards or organize your sock drawer. OK, so that may only be appealing to dorks like me. I have an idea! You could go to the All Local Farmers’ Market at 701 Whaley Saturday morning! GreenItUp! will be there in style courtesy of Andrea M. and Stephanie S.. (There are not enough words with which to thank Stephanie S..) We will have free cookies and two new scents: sweet orange and cinnamon. Jenny P. has donated her time to help prepare cookies even though she can no longer be my lovely assistant. (She’s still lovely though.) So, come out and get a cookie, buy some cleaner, get a $3 refill if yours is empty.

But maybe you have watched too much 80′s-nostalgia programming on VH-1 in the last decade and worry that cookies, grits and that yummy Caw Caw Creek bacon will leave you looking like the lead singer of Loverboy does now. (Those red leather pants just break my heart!)  I can empathise with you. In this case, you should go to City Yoga for Jenny P.’s Hot Yoga class at 11AM.

Better yet, do it all. Clean your home, body and soul!

Dear Teresa,

I need your help in cleaning my lab. Admittedly, I run a very untidy lab. But after returning from vacation with my family, I found that some of my cultures of stephylococcus had been contaminated with some sort of fungus. What can I do?

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your question! First, if you are unable to keep your lab clean, you should hire someone like myself. A dirty environment, aside from being unpleasant, can cause the spread of bacteria and disease. You should know better!

Anyway, you need to clean petri dishes that have been contaminated with a fungus and I am here to help. You will need three things: 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tbsps of vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil. Both the hydrogen peroxide and the vinegar have anti-fungal properties and the tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant. Wipe the petri dishes (and any affected areas) with the mixture using a soft cloth, cotton balls or Q-tips. Rinse with water.

This same mixture can be used at home to disinfect and remove mold and mildew.

While accidents can happen, it is imperative to keep your environment clean and healthy!

When choosing an ingredient for cleaning, it is important to know whether you need an acid (low pH) or base (neutral to high pH). So a very quick chemistry lesson couldn’t hurt.

Acid Cleaners

lemon juice, olive oil, club soda, vinegar

Acids are best on:

rust, soap scum, water spots, mirrors, windows

Base Cleaners

Soap, baking Soda, Borax, Washing Soda

Bases are best on:

body oil, food stains, general dirt and grime

Combining a base and an acid is great for cleaning in your kitchen and bathroom where you have multiple offenders.

We all know that acid and rock’n’roll complement each other like The Man and a clenched fist. But acid and rock surfaces in your home do not! And since most of the hippies out there have grown up and now have beautiful new homes, my cleaning tips may come in handy.

Stone Countertops must be treated with more care than other countertops. They are very susceptible to damage from grease, heat, water and especially acids.  Follow these simple rules to keep your stone countertops clean and free from scratches and damage.

If you spill something, blot it up immediately with a soft cloth or sponge. If your stone is porous, sprinkle some cornstarch on it to soak up the fluid and wipe that off. Avoid putting hot pans or plates on them without a hot pad underneath. Always use coasters and cutting boards. Stone is most vulnerable to anything acidic. So, be careful with tomatoes, oranges, lemons and vinegar.  Never clean countertops with anything containing vinegar or ammonia. Even bathroom cleaners labeled as “mild” or “soft” are too abrasive.

Because stone is scratched easily by anything acidic you need to clean them with something that has a natural PH.  The best thing to use is a mixture of ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of liquid soap.

By the way, if you are a former hippie who has sold out to a beautiful home and a corporate job, don’t feel too bad. At least you didn’t become Jefferson Starship!

Mark Your Calendar: August 7th!!!

You probably did not go to the All-Local Farmers’ Market last Saturday even though I suggested it. (I forgive you – this time.) However, you must come on Saturday the 7th. Why? Because I will be there with my lovely assistant, Jenny P., selling GreenItUp!’s MultiPurpose Cleaner! You will be able to choose from rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint or unscented.

So, come out, get a bottle. Tell anyone you think may be interested to come also. The Market is located at 701 Whaley in Olympia and is open from 8am to noon.

Don’t forget to pick up some of that yummy bacon I told you about a few blogs ago.
